Note: The task of this party to the Trans-Antarctic Expedition was to lay depots from McMurdo Sound to the head of the Beardmore Glacier in order to provision Shackleton after he passed the pole. A landing was made at Cape Evans and whilst the party was away laying their first depot the 'Aurora' was driven from her anchorage by a succession of heavy gales and was finally frozen solid in the pack ice for nine months, following which necessary repairs were carried out in New Zealand. Captain Mackintosh was drowned when crossing treacherous ice between Hut Point and Cape Evans
