Lot Essay

The inspiration for Hara Kiyoshi's work is found in Chinese ceramics. In his twenties he learned Chinese iron-glaze techniques from Ishiguro Munemaro (1893-1968), a "Living National Treasure," and Shimizu Uichi (b. 1926). In the 1960s, he began working with the blue glazes characteristic of Jun ware. He lives in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture.
