This picture was previously fully attributed to Carl Gustave Carus by the late Dr Marianne Prause, an attribution which has subsequently been disputed by Dr Borsch-Supan. The present work remains a fine example of German romanticist painting in the tradition of Carus and Caspar David Friedrich. Carus and Friedrich has been close friends, and between 1817 and 1823, under Friedrich's instruction, Carus painted a number of works on subjects which were familiar to Friedrich such as lonely coasts or snow covered ruins. It is likely that the present work dates from this period.
