The present work depicts the three ballerinas Rosella Hightower, Majorie Tallchief and Tamara Toumanova, who were all active in the Americas and Europe in the 1940s. George Blanchine engaged Toumanova for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, for whom Larionov worked from 1914 as a stage and costume designer, and went on to create a role for her in his Le Palais de Cristal in 1947 at the Paris Opera. Tallchief married Blanchine in 1946 and appeared in many of his operas from 1947 onwards. The fourth person depicted in the present work is David Lichine who danced for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo from 1932 to 1945.
