Lot Essay

Alexandre Brongniart was the son of the prominent architect Alexandre- Theodore Brongniart, designer of the Paris Bourse, and friend of Houdon. The young Alexandre went on to become a famous mineralogist and geologist and in 1800 was appointed Director of the Sevres manufactory where he revived the virtually lost art of painting on glass.
