Lot Essay

This urn is a copy of one of a pair amongst thirteen pairs made for the marble parapets that separate the Parterre du Nord from the Parterre du Midi at Versailles. Claude Ballin (1615-1678), goldsmith to Louis XIV was commissioned to design the urns which were then moulded by Legendre, Magnire, Tuby and Anguier. They were cast by Duval after 1665. The urns were copied from the mid 19th century.
