Louis-Charles Sterlin founded his firm as a cottage industry centered around Woincourt in Picardy, soon developing it into a mechanised industry with a Paris outlet. On his death in 1834, the Sterlin estate named Eugene Bricard as administrator of the firm. Soon afterwards he bought the business and developed it further by exhibiting at Paris Expositions. He was very interested in the designs and styles of the past, collecting a large number of examples and documentation relating to earlier types. This collection is currently housed in the Hotel Liberal Bruant in Paris. Bricard continued to produce high quality fittings into the 20th century, being very popular amongst the wealthy families of Newport, U.S.A. -One of the firm's designers, Jules Allard, produced decorative schemes for the Vanderbilt household. The firm remained in the Bricard family until 1989. COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: York B.D. Signatures des Artistes du Bronze et fondeurs du XIXeme siecle, Les Editions de Collections Livres.
