An Austrian large fruitwood, gilt-brass and alabaster mounted grande sonnerie portico clock with automata, second quarter 19th century
The star-shaped case with pressed foliate mounts, above a galleried base with mirrored back and alabaster columns, the rear with relief mounts of Hercules and an Amazon, with marquetry simulated tile floor, the front with lyre, foliate scroll and fruiting basket mounts, on alabaster feet, the dial with white enamel Arabic chapter ring, the ormolu centre with floral garland mount to the lower section and dolphin with trident entwined around the central winding hole, the upper dial with automaton forge, one cherub with automaton arm with anvil beating a hammer, the other with automaton leg turning a wheel, with steel spade hands, the three train short duration movement with silk suspension and chimes on two gongs, the pendulum bob modelled as flying cherubs supporting a basket of fruit -- 27¾in. (70.5cm.) high
