A George III oak and mahogany longcase clock, circa 1780
The hood with stepped flat top and fretwork cornice panels, cross-banded door and outset plain columns, the trunk door also cross-banded and flanked by full length pilasters, on plinth with canted angles, the 13in. wide cut-away brass dial with foliate scroll spandrels to the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with floral fleur-de-lys half hour markers, the centre silvered and elaborately engraved with curlicues and with flowerheads around the winding holes, with date box, blued steel hands, the arch with painted rolling moon and signed on a silvered arch above WILLIAM PORTHOUSE PENRITH, the four pillar rack striking movement with anchor escapement and strike on bell -- 79in. (201cm.) high
