Gun No. 737 provides a fine example of G. H. Daw's improvement on F. E. Schneider patent No. 1487 of 1861 which was one of the most significant developments in the history of breech-loading gun. Daw, appreciating the ingenuity of the combination of the centre-fire principle with the automatically bolted breech-loading gun, went on to improve the design, as here, with an underlever/triggerguard catch, a strengthening of the hinge-pin via a transverse bar in the action-bar, and sprung strikers and an extractor-stop
