Lot Essay

Compare two carved red lacquer tiered boxes illustrated by Sir Harry Garner, Chinese Lacquer, London, 1979, pls. 42 and 42, in the Victoria and Albert and British Museums respectively. The scene carved on the top of the circular tiered box illustrated in pl. 42 is related in its style of carving as well as theme to the present box. The tiered box in pl. 41 is of sqaure form and although the scene on top is not visible, the sides are similarly carved with four different flower sprays. Both boxes are dated to the late 15th century.
