Lot Essay

The finely controlled and unusually tight pattern of the marbled design of this piece is rare. For another piece which displays similar marbling see the pear-shaped vase with tri-lobed mouth in the Hoyt Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illustrated by W. Watson, Tang and Liao Ceramics, New York, 1984, p. 107, pl. 74, which is dated late 9th or 10th century.
