Lot Essay

This boldly painted Cizhou meiping belongs to a group of vessels painted in a very distinctive style, which are usually dated to the 13th -14th century. The specific depiction of the phoenix with fan-like tail and a body composed of consecutive rounded sections, and shown with outstretched wings amid curly cloud forms, links this vase with a small number of other vessels in museum collections.

A guan jar with similar phoenixes and clouds on one side is illustrated in Taikei toji, vol. 39, Cizhou wares, Heibonsha, Tokyo, 1974, p. 109, no. 41. Another jar with similar phoenixes is in the collection of Chifeng City Museum and illustrated in Zhongguo Taoci Quanji 10 Yuan shang, Shanghai, 2000, no. 227, where it is dated to the Yuan dynasty.
