After the restoration of the Imperial kilns during the early years of the reign of the emperor Kangxi, new glaze colors were introduced, incorporating new technology and new minerals. The rich ruby enamel of the present bowl, along with lime green, were two of these new bright colors which included an opacifier to give previously translucent enamels an opaque body.

A pair of very similar bowls is illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1991, no. 126.
