Lot Essay

Bottles of this formalized floral form, probably based on the chrysanthemum, were produced at the Court in the Qianlong period and thereafter in a variety of materials, including glass. For further examples and discussion, see H. Moss, V. Graham, K.B. Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles: The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Hong Kong, 1998, vol. 2, Quartz, nos. 235 and 337, and B. Stevens, The Collector's Book of Snuff Bottles, New York, 1976, no. 1009. This is smaller, and of a softer profile than most.
For a crystal version of this same Imperial shape, see G. Tsang and H. Moss, Snuff Bottles of the Ch'ing Dynasty, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1978, p. 108, no. 184.
