Lot Essay

During the second half of his reign, the Qianlong emperor became so obsessed with the acquisition of jadeite directly from Burma that he wasted enormous sums of money, and endless lives on various attempts to 'subdue' Burma. From the second half of his reign, jadeite began to figure more prominently in Imperial production, among which were examples of various colours, including lavender and lilac blue. This is a mid-Qing example with unusually good and relatively even color.

For a very similar lavender jadeite bottle in the collection of Denis Low, see R. Kleiner, Treasures from the Sanctum of Enlightened Respect, Singapore, 1999, no. 58.
