Oblong with shaped ends, the hinged cover engraved with Matthew 7 vs 3-5, The Sermon on the Mount, and a Dutch description, the end panels of the cover engraved with figures emblematic of Charity and Justice, the sides with a hunting scene, surrounded by floral and foliate decoration, the base engraved with a scene of Matthew 8 vs 2-3, The Stilling of the Sea, with Dutch description, the end panels with figures emblematic of Hope and Faith, the rim engraved with the name Gerrit C. Sordrager, marked on interior base

Lot Essay

The rim is engraved Matth 71'3 (sic.) Een schijn deugt die de deugt niet in Sijn hert besint, Is tot Sijn feilen doof, en in Sijn Sonden blint, Maar Siet een ander aan, en Oogt na die gebreken Die na een Splinter Soekt, een Balk in 't Oog heeft Steken.
The inscription on the base reads, Math 81'23 (sic.) De Jongren zijn bevreest, de Meester Schijnt haar doof Te wesen, maar zijn macht Slaapt niet met haar geloof. Die heeft in Sijn geweld, de wilde en woeste baren. De Schepper van de Zee, doet licht de Zee bedaren.
