Lot Essay

Frederiks, op. cit., identifies Arent van Bolten as probably the monogrammist AVB. Van Bolten was born in Zwolle in about 1573, married in 1603 and died before 1633. His individual style is extremely distinctive and can be seen in the present lot. Frederiks notes that this plaquette 'constitutes further proof of the skill and taste of this master who was undoubtedly one of the greatest designers and embossers of the Netherlands.'
