A FINELY COLOURED SET, WITH WIDE UNCUT MARGINS, OF THIS BEAUTIFUL WORK ON SHELLS. This is a Dutch-language version of a work first published in German as Vergnügen der Augen und des Gemüths (Nuremberg: 1757-1772), but now most widely known from the French text translation of 1760-1773 (Les délices des yeux et de l'esprit). Parts I to III of the present edition are by Philip Ludwig Statius Muller (1725-1776) with the remaining parts by Martinus Houttuyn. The plates are were drawn from examples in collections in both Holland and Germany with the contemporary owners of the shells being identified in most instances. Cf. Dance Shell Collecting 'Bibliography' 156-157 (German and French editions, also noting this); Landwehr Dutch Books with Coloured Plates 96; Nissen ZBI 2236. (2)
