A mid-18th century wine-glass in the Victoria and Albert Museum, with a similar design of a whaler and identical lettering is signed on the foot Jan Stam. The same signature is found on two panes of glass diamond-engraved with whaling scenes.

Hunting the whale in icy waters around Greenland used to be a dangerous but lucrative undertaking. The safe return of the whaler was therefore a good reason for a whaling company to show its appreciation to the management and skipper by commissioning a goblet.
