Circa 1780-1790
Painted en grisaille with a medallion depicting a view of the church, abbey and mint of the city Middelburg (Zeeland) after an engraving by Th. Koning, inscribed below with 'Nieuwe Kerk Abtdy Tooren en Munt', the rim encircled by a narrow crenellated and cell-pattern border enriched in gilt, rim restoration, cracks and minute chips

Lot Essay

This view is after an engraving by Theodorus Koning (1748-1829) showing the 'Nieuwe Kerk, Abtdytoren en Munt' published in the Zeelands Cronykalmanak, December 1977, a copy of which is in the Rijks Prentenkabinet, Amsterdam. A plate in the Zeeuws Museum, Middelburg with an identical decoration is illustrated in D.F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain - Chine de Commande, London, 1974, ill. 305 and 306; and in Hervouët et Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental., Paris, 1986, p. 238, fig. 10.3
