A rare 'Gluckig Arivement' plate
Circa 1730
Decorated with three ships under full sail flying the Dutch flag, the ships painted with shaded brown, blue, rose, white and iron-red, the right ship heightened in gilding and flying a yellow, white and brown flag, the central ship with an indecipherable name IVEVUUK...(?), underneath the inscription GLUCKIG ARIVEMENT, 'happy homecoming' (homecoming), encircled at the rim with four flower-sprays interpersed with four blue dragon medallions, between a green and yellow ground trellis diaper pattern border, restored
22.5 cm. (8 7/8 in.) diam.

This rare subject of treasure-laden merchantmen returning to home port, so emblematic of the China trade, is found in the Mottahedeh collection, see Howard and J.
