Lot Essay

The arms are those of the State of Holland, with the V.O.C. cypher of the Dutch East India Company. The design was probably taken from a silver ducatoon of 1728 with the rim imitating the ribbed milling of the coin. A very similar teabowl and saucer is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated by W. B. Honey, Guide to the Later Chinese Porcelain Periods of K'ang Hsi, Yung Chêng and Ch'ien Lung, London, 1927, pl.110a.
