Lot Essay

These chairs first appeared in the early 18th century but were still manufactured almost a century later. A chair of this type is illustrated in Thomas Sheraton The Cabinet Directory (London 1803) on plate 41. By repute Lord Angelsy used a pair of these chairs when serving with Wellington at Waterloo.
