Lot Essay
The present lot can be identified as the beach of Portorose, Italy, on the basis of a comparison with the painting illustrated in the Maandblad voor Beeldende Kunsten, April 1930, p. 120. As the above mentioned painting was in the possession of the artist at the time of publication, we can only assume that the identification of the location was correct. This painting was part of the artist's estate sale in April 1935 (lot 11).
Isaac Israels travelled frequently through Italy in the 1920's, often in the company of his girlfriend, Mrs Sophie de Vries. One of his favourite subject matters in Italy, were famous beach resorts such as Viareggio and the Lido in Venice, where he painted bathers on the beach in the strong sunlight of the Mediterranean.
We are grateful to Mr Joop van Roosmalen for confirming the authenticity on the basis of a colour photograph and for his help in cataloguing this lot.
