CLEVELAND, Grover (1837-1908). President. Photograph signed ("Grover Cleveland") as President, showing the President and his first term Cabinet, by Prince & Cudlip, also signed by Postmaster General WILLIAM F. VILAS, Secretary of State THOMAS F. BAYARD, Secretary of the Navy WILLIAM C. WHITNEY, Secretary of War WILLIAM C. ENDICOTT, Secretary of the Treasury DANIEL MANNING, Attorney General AUGUSTUS H. GARLAND, and Secretary of the Interior LUCIUS Q.C. LAMAR, Washington, D.C., 1885. 21 x 27 in. including mount, pale vertical matburn, otherwise fine. Printed caption on mount reads: "The President and Cabinet" and identifies the subjects by title. Preserved in a period (probably original) frame.
PRESIDENT CLEVELAND AND HIS CABINET
A superb, sepia-toned, oversize photograph of the forty-eight year old President and his Cabinet, probably taken near the beginning of his first term. The President is shown sitting besides three members of the Cabinet, while another four stand behind him. The men are posed against a photographer's set, with an oriental rug and small side table used as props, the background a faux panel depicting a large interior and window. While cabinet photographs of Cleveland are fairly common, photographs of this scale are quite rare. The Jerome Schochet Collection included a later image of Cleveland and the Cabinet measuring 20 x 21½ inches, considerably smaller than the present (sold Christie's New York, 20 May 1994, lot 20, $5,000). Cleveland is the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms, being both the 22nd (1885-1889) and the 24th President (1893-1897). This fine image is reproduced in H. Paul Jeffers's An Honest President: The Life and Presidencies of Grover Cleveland (New York, 2000), p.131.
