ROOSEVELT, Theodore. The Winning of the West. An Account of the Exploration and Settlement of Our Country from the Alleghanies to the Pacific. Philadelphia: Gebbie and Company, 1903.
6 volumes, 8o (8½ x 5¾ in.). Frontispieces in three states (most with the first signed in pencil) and plates in three states by R.G. Vosburgh, P.R. Audibert, Louis Bauhan, C. Mente, E.A. King, Clare Angell, H.L.V. Parkhurst, E. Herring and Will Crawford. Brown morocco gilt, gilt-lettered on spine, top edge gilt, others uncut (small faint scuff to front cover of vol. III).
Later edition, WITH A LONG PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT TO ARTHUR W. SAGER on the front flyleaf: "To Arthur W. Sager; Dear Sager, You and I have fought shoulder to shoulder for what we esteemed the great ideals of the American people; we have both lived much in the west; and in these volumes I have set forth some of the reasons why I believe in the American people, and perhaps especially those of the west. Your friend Theodore Roosevelt Feb 17th 1917."
The Winning of the West was Roosevelt's literary masterpiece. It won high praise from reviewers, and its many admirers included Frederick Jackson Turner. After completing it, Roosevelt wondered whether, "I have or have not properly expressed all the ideas that seethed vaguely in my soul as I wrote it" (quoted in Edmund Morris, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, New York, 2001, p.397). The book's success was immense, with the first edition disappearing in little more than a month. (4)
