HARDING, Warren G. Typed letter signed ("Warren G. Harding") as President, TO VICE-PRESIDENT CALVIN COOLIDGE, Washington, D.C., 2 October 1922. 1 page, 4to (8 7/8 x 7 in.), integral blank, White House stationery, some very light soiling, otherwise fine.

THE PRESIDENT TO THE VICE-PRESIDENT REGARDING THE APPROACHING ELECTIONS: "I KNOW THAT YOU CAN HELP IMMENSELY"

A year and a half into his Presidency, Harding writes to Coolidge about the upcoming elections, with an uncorrected error by the typist causing the salutation to read, "My dear Mr. President." Harding mentions his wife's convalescence, presumably from her kidney condition, and turns Coolidge's attention to the November elections: "... I feel very confident the party will win in Massachusetts, though I am ready to believe it will require some diligent campaigning. We really feel very well satisfied over the prospects in Ohio.... By the way, the Chairman of our State Committee and the Chairman of our Speaker's Bureau are very anxious for one or two addresses by you in Ohio during the October campaign... If you can make it convenient to your plans to go into Ohio it would be very gratifying to them and very pleasing to me. Not on my account, but on behalf of the party generally, I think it is essential to record a signal victory in the Buckeye State. I know that you can help immensely."

Coolidge was not active in his role as Vice-President. He attended Cabinet meetings but took little part in the proceedings and rarely interjected from the chair while presiding over the Senate.

Provenance: Mrs. Philip D. Sang (sale, Sotheby's, 31 October 1985, lot 80).
