FORD, Gerald (1913- ). President. Autograph manuscript signed ("Gerald R. Ford"), a tribute to President Eisenhower, n.p., 30 August 1979. 1½ pages, 8vo (8½ x 6 3/8 in.), on Ford's personal stationery with the Presidential seal, on rectos only, in very fine condition.
"A TRIBUTE TO IKE": FORD REMEMBERS EISENHOWER
Former President Ford pens an adulatory reminiscence of Eisenhower: "President Eisenhower was my hero as a military leader before he became our President. His exemplary service in the White House made him an even greater leader in my mind. After leaving the Presidency he continued to exemplify the qualities that I always admired. During his Presidency I was in the House of Representatives so I saw first hand that he was a man of integrity, of wisdom, of strength, of compassion and of devotion to all that is good in and for America. I loved, trusted and admired Ike and history will record his greatness." Purportedly, the manuscript was solicited by an alumnus of the now-defunt Eisenhower College for use in an alumni publication.
Autograph material of such extent by Ford is decidedly uncommon. American Book Prices Current records only five autograph letters in the last 25 years, most of them scant notes.
