REAGAN, Ronald. Autograph draft letter signed ("Ronald") as Governor of California, to Maytor McKinley, n.p., [ca. 2 February 1968]. 1 page, 8vo (9 x 6 in.), with red ink filing mark across text and date "2/26/68" at upper corner, in fine condition.
"THAT OTHER OFFICE": REAGAN ON THE PRESIDENCY: "I DO NOT BELIEVE I SHOULD PRESENT MYSELF AS A CANDIDATE, NOR WILL I"
Reagan drafts a response to a letter from Maytor McKinley of Louisiana. "I very much appreciate your good opinion and am greatly honored as I've told you before that you should think of me in connection with that other office. However I do not believe I should present myself as a candidate nor will I. To be honest I've always believed no man should. That job should seek the man." Reagan had in fact been planning on announcing his candidacy for President in 1968. At the Republican Convention in Miami Beach in August 1968, he was unsuccesful in gaining sufficient support. His efforts at the time were "abortive and amateurish," but the effort proved instructive for his eventual bid for the White House in the 1980 election (see Lou Cannon, President Reagan, New York, 2000, p.445).
