William Holman Hunt, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, was inspired by his strong Christian beliefs to embark on a journey to the Holy Land in January 1854. After a brief stay in Cairo and Jaffa he made his base in Jerusalem for over a year and a half, until October 1856. He made a second visit to Jerusalem (Aug 1869-June 1872) and his largest-scale work to that date, Shadow of Death, is a product of this visit. After his marriage to Edith Waugh in 1876 he made a third and final visit to Jerusalem and this architectural drawing of a church faâde is an example of his work from this period.
We are grateful to Dr Judith Bronkhurst for her help cataloguing this drawing.
