Lot Essay

The original hall at Penshurst was completed in 1341 for Sir John de Pulteney and is one of the finest examples of the architecture of that period. The garden is also one of the oldest in private ownership, parts of it date from the time of Pulteney's hall and much of the garden remains as it was constructed in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. John Evelyn wrote of Penshurst in 1652 'We went to see Penshurst, famous for its gardens and excellent fruit.'
