Lot Essay

Edward Lear travelled extensively through Greece in the 1850s and 1860s and his watercolours are a visual representation of a landscape in transition from the period of Ottoman rule to that of a modern state. This sketch of a group of peasants in native dress on the plains of the northern city of Ioannina depicts a Greece which had all but disappeared by the end of the nineteenth century.
