Lot Essay

This magnificent pair of parcel-giltwood recumbent lions draw their inspiration from Florentine Renaissance sculpture. Lions were a common symbolic beast in religious and secular art, with many attributions. In the Middle Ages they were a symbol of the Resurrection because, according to the bestiaries, the cubs when born lay dead for three days until their father brought them to life by breathing in their faces.
