Lot Essay

A related canterbury with reeded legs and four divisions, bearing the 'Gillows Lancaster' stamp and corresponding to the pattern from the company's March 1862 Estimate Sketch Book, for retail by Fergusson & Co., Oxford Street was sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 3 February 1999, lot 182 (the design reproduced here). Although the current canterbury is not stamped by Gillows, the cedar-lined drawer points to the high quality production that typified the firm's work and strongly supports an attribution.
