Circa 1690, one leg largely replaced and two feet replaced
The quarter-veneered, featherbanded and crossbanded hinged rectangular top opening to a banded red velvet-inset surface, opening on two gate-legs, the shaped apron with a drawer to either short end, on tapering faceted legs with turned capitals and bases joined by a stretcher, on bun feet, the brass handles replaced
28¾in. (73cm.) high, 30½in. (77.5cm.) wide, 11¼in. (28.5cm.) deep closed, 22¾in. (58cm.) deep open

The form of this arched frame table corresponds to that of a card/writing-table of the 1690s bearing the Bowes family crest as illustrated in R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev.edn., Woodbridge, 1954, vol.III, p.242, fig.4. Another pair of tables of this rare form japanned in black and gilt formed part of the collections of Lord Fairhaven and Marjorie Wiggin Prescott (The Prescott collection sold in these Rooms, 31 January 1981, lot 351).
