A set of eighteen chairs dating to the nineteenth century exhibiting carving of a similar character and with same profile back legs (but cabriole front legs) was sold Sotheby's London, 10 July 1998, lot 81 (£100,500). Both sets of chairs are inspired by designs published in Thomas Chippendale's Director and demonstrate the longlasting popularity of this influential design book, particularly in the outer provinces.
