Lot Essay

A similar Russian turquoise-covered gold box, bearing the mark of Carl Helfried Barbé of St. Petersburg, is in the collection of the Hillwood Museum and Gardens, and published in Kenneth Snowman, Eighteenth Century Gold Boxes of Europe, 1966, pl. 641. Another turquoise-covered trunk-form snuffbox, maker's mark DK of St. Petersburg, is in the Gilbert Collection and illustrated in Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, vol. 2, 1999, p. 89.
