Lot Essay

French-born Lionard Morel-Ladeuil (1820-88) designed this jardiniere and an accompanying ewer, for Elkington & Co. Morel-Ladeuil studied under Antoine Vechte before joining the Birmingham firm of Elkington & Co. in 1859. His highly successful relationship with that firm resulted in a number of masterpieces such as the Invention Vase of 1853, the Milton Shield of 1867 and the Helicon Vase of 1871. A jardiniere of this same design, featuring panels of wine and wheat harvest and differing only in its handle motifs, is illustrated in L'Oeuvre de Morel-Ladeuil: Sculpteur-Ciseleur 1820-1888, 1904, p. 27.
