Lot Essay
The high silver standard and restrained neoclassical design of these wine coolers suggest they were inspired by the work of French silversmith Henri Auguste (1759-1816), or even made to match existing models by him. Auguste's designs (now in the collection of Maison Odiot) favor a simple contrast between an unadorned silver surface and bands of neoclassical ornament. A design for a similar wine cooler, but applied with a winged Victory, by Jean-Guillaume Moitte for Henri Auguste, was in the Odiot collection, no. 470, and sold Sotheby's, Monaco, February 22, 1986, lot 182.
