Lot Essay

The mannequin pictured was Man Ray's contribution to the historic Exposition internationale du Surréalisme held at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1938. This print and lot 85 originate from the collection of Marcel Jean, the surrealist painter, who also designed a mannequin for the 1938 exhibition. This print was given by Man Ray to Jean and used in his 1959 book, The History of Surrealist Painting.
