TALISMANIC SCROLL
Probably Central Asia or East Turkestan, 14th century
Arabic and Persian manuscript on paper, prayers and verses from the Qur'an written in small black naskh horizontally, diagonally, in circular or star shaped panels, some panels with the text forming a grid highlighted with floral illumination, with an outer border of larger black naskh against a red hatched ground, small illuminated panels with the titles of the sura in white muhaqqaq, one panel overpainted in gold, small section at the end replaced

Lot Essay

The strong chinoiserie feel to this scroll places it after the Mongol invasion, and suggests an Ilkanid date. The use of Persian as well as Arabic suggests a location within the Iranian sphere of influence.
