Lot Essay

The Persian inscription is difficult to understand; it can possibly be translated: "Out of the felicity of the Pivot of the World, that angel if Help [for] men".

Two tiles from the same series were sold in these Rooms 14 October 1997, lot 386. The inscription on those tiles recorded the foundation of a mosque. Using the abjad system of dating, which was indicated by the inscription, these were dated AH 1024.
