A SAFAVID COVERED BRASS BOWL
Iran, late 16th or early 17th century
Of cylindrical form, the slightly convex cover with flaring knop, the sides and cover engraved with bands of elegant nasta'liq calligraphy divided by arabesque roundels, panels of meandering vine above and below, the grounds sharply hatched and inlaid with black and bright red composition, the interior plain, some composition ground now lacking, generally good condition
9in. (23cm.) diam.

The inscriptions are verses in Persian, including three couplets from Jami around the lid, Four benedictory couplets are around the body, three by Sa'di and one by Daqiqi. The verses include one which can be translated "my spiritual guide told me: in covering be like a lid no matter where you see a fault". Another states "may the issue of Bahram be praised, indicating the the original owner must have been a certain Bahram.
