Lot Essay

The moulded honeycomb lattice on the body of this jug is frequently encountered in post-Sasanian glass vessels. What is most unusual however is the handle in the form of a stylised dragon. Bronze handles frequently have animal or particularly birds' heads at the terminals, but it is extremely unusual in any medium to have the animal forming the complete handle at this period. That is a feature which did not become popular until the Timurid period, three centuries later.
