Ottoman Turkey, circa 1565
Of rectangular form painted in cobalt-blue, turquoise and bole-red within black outlines on a white ground, showing bold radiating alternating palmettes containing floral sprays, slight fritting at edges
8½ a 6¾in. (21.5 x 17cm.)

Lot Essay

Five tiles from this border are in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon (Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, catalogue, Lisbon, 1982, no.120). Two further examples are in the Benaki Museum, Athens (Les Arts Décoratifs Musulmans, exhibition catalogue, Alexandria, 1927, pl.26). A single tile is in the Çinili Kösk, Istanbul (Pasinli, Alpay and Balaman, Saliha: Turkish Tiles and Ceramics, Çinili Kösk, Istanbul, 1991, p.96).
