A late 19th-Century surgical instrument set,
by Down Bros, opposite Guy's Hospital with three layers including: first layer, 3 Liston-type amputation knives, two retractors, two trocars, a scalpel stamped Gardner, Edinburgh, two forceps, a double ended instrument stamped Brady & Martin Ltd, a tracheotomy cannulae, a needle, the majority of instruments with ebony handles; second layer, a metacarpel, a Hey-type double saw and a curette all with ebony handles, a double ended raspatory, a pair of artery forceps, two directors, an aural mirror (cracked), a sponge holder; and in the base, a trephine, elevator, a bistoury with tortoiseshell handle, a laryngeal mirror, a Blake-type snare, a MacKenzie-type tonsil guillotine, a double-ended curved needles, a mouth gag, a Sims-type vaginal speculum. Some pieces are missing and have been replaced, contained in a brass bound oak case -- 18in. (46cm.) long
