Lot Essay

Mixed edition, VOLUME III FIRST EDITION. 'Henle's influential textbook of anatomy contains a well-illustrated account of the entire corpus of contemporary knowledge about the human body. It did not become obsolete as a textbook until the rise of the functional approach to anatomy. Several anatomical structures are named after Henle, including the looped portion of the nephron, the layer of cells in the root sheath of a hair, and the ampulla of the uterine tube' (Norman). The work is composed of the following six parts: Handbuch der Knochenlehre des Menschen (volume I, part i, 1871, third edition); Handbuch der Bänderlehre des Menschen (I, ii, 1872, third edition); Handbuch der Muskellehre des Menschen (I, iii, 1871 (amended in ink to 1872), second edition); Handbuch der Eingeweidelehre des Menschen (II, 1873, second edition); Handbuch der Gefässlehre des Menschen (III, i, 1868, first edition); Handbuch der Nervenlehre des Menschen (III, ii, 1871, first edition). For the first edition cf. Garrison-Morton 417; Norman 1052.
