Lot Essay

FIRST EDITION of this work by Mauthner, describing a modification of Jaeger's ophthalmoscope. Born in Prague, Mauthner studied in Vienna before travelling to Berlin, Utrecht and Berlin. He returned to Vienna in 1864, and was appointed professor of Ophthalmology at Innsbruck in 1869. In 1877 he gave up his position and returned to Vienna, where he was employed as a dozent until he was appointed professor at the University Eye Clinic on 19 October 1894; however his unexpected death from a heart attack the following night meant that he never took up the post.
