A fine and rare late 16th-Century gilt-brass horizontal sundial,
signed MARCVS PVRMAN MONACHY FACIEBAT VIRTORIVM 1594, in diptych form, the lid with decorative foliate engraving and a central volvelle with similar decoration, pierced to show the phases of the moon and engraved INDEX DIERVM and ALTATIS LUNAE, graduated around the edge 2-12, 1-10 and with a recessed index to read off a concealed scale 1-29 and an outer scale graduated 1-12 (x2), the underside of the lid with signature and date and a circular hour scale 1-12 (x2) with wind rose with four initialled points and a brass index at the centre, further engraved OCCIDENT, ORIENT and MERIDIES, the base with folding plummet support in the form of two sea beasts and (replacement) string, the glazed compass box with blued-iron needle with brass cap and three engraved needle lines in the base (replacment glass), the string entering the base through an engraved sun-face with rays irradiating to the hour scale 4-12, 1-8 shown within a scroll, the underside with a table for Tabula longitudinis diei et ingressus solis in XII Signa Zodiacus (see below) -- 2¼in.
